Three exceptional students from Taunton Public Schools have been recognized as recipients of the 2024 Francis W. Gallishaw Memorial Award, which includes a $1,000 scholarship funded by the South Coast Educational Collaborative. This annual honor acknowledges outstanding academic achievement, leadership, and service across Southeastern Massachusetts school districts.
The 2024 honorees from Taunton Public Schools are Natalie Duncan of Taunton High School, Evelyn Miller of Taunton Alternative High School, and Mary Wallace of Taunton Public Virtual Academy. Each recipient has exemplified excellence in academics and leadership within their respective schools.
Natalie Duncan, ‘25 – Taunton High School
Ranked first in her class of 521 students, Natalie has achieved remarkable academic success, completing 11 Advanced Placement courses and earning AP Scholar with Distinction recognition. Her commitment to learning extends to her participation in the Johnson & Johnson Emerging Leaders Program, which aligns with her plans to study biomedical engineering.
“Natalie is the epitome of academic excellence and leadership,” said John Harrison, Ed.D, Principal of Taunton High School. “Her drive and ambition, paired with her ability to inspire others, make her a role model for her peers and a deserving recipient of this prestigious award.”
Natalie also serves as Co-President of the Key Club, a DECA Board Member, and a four-year member of the Student Advisory Committee. Her contributions to the National Honor Society and Student Council, coupled with her achievements in Latin, further highlight her dedication to excellence.
Evelyn Miller, ‘25 – Taunton Alternative High School
Evelyn is the top-ranked student academically in the TAHS Class of 2025, maintaining a 3.35 GPA while balancing school, work, and leadership roles. As a two-year member of the award-winning Junior Achievement team, Evelyn currently serves as CEO, exemplifying her leadership and entrepreneurial spirit.
“Evelyn’s achievements are a testament to her determination and resilience,” said Bert Delaney, Principal of Taunton Alternative High School. “She leads by example and balances her many responsibilities with grace and poise, making her an inspiration to our school community.”
In addition to her academic and extracurricular achievements, Evelyn works 20–30 hours per week outside of school and contributes as a peer tutor, showcasing her commitment to supporting her peers and her community.
Mary Wallace, ‘25 – Taunton Public Virtual Academy
Mary Wallace embodies the spirit of resilience and determination that defines the Francis W. Gallishaw Memorial Award. An innovator in the newly established Taunton Public Virtual Academy, Mary has thrived in a self-directed learning environment, excelling academically and contributing to her school community.
Inspired by her love of literature, Mary chose to take advanced electives in her senior year to refine her writing skills. Her achievements reflect her dedication to personal growth and her commitment to pursuing her passions.
“Mary is an exceptional student who has overcome challenges with grace and determination,” said Principal Elizabeth Rodrigues of Taunton Public Virtual Academy. “She is a pioneer in our program, and her success is a reflection of her hard work, self-motivation, and love of learning. We couldn’t be prouder of her.”
The scholarships, sponsored by the South Coast Educational Collaborative’s Board of Directors, will be awarded after the recipients complete their first semester of higher education.
“Each of these students represents the best of what Taunton Public Schools stands for,” said Superintendent John J. Cabral. “Natalie, Evelyn, and Mary have shown incredible dedication to their education and their communities. Their success is a testament not only to their hard work but also to the supportive network of families, educators, and peers around them.
