Understanding Section 504 Plans

Section 504 is a federal civil rights law that protects students with disabilities from discrimination and ensures they have equal access to educational programs and activities. Through a Section 504 Plan, eligible students may receive accommodations, supports, or services that help them participate fully in school and access learning opportunities alongside their peers.

It is important to note that Section 504 is not Special Education. Unlike Special Education services provided under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), a Section 504 Plan provides accommodations and supports but does not include specially designed instruction. The purpose of Section 504 is to remove barriers and ensure equal access to education for students with qualifying disabilities.
